How to Prepare Children (and Parents!) for a Relaxed Family Photo Session

Autumn Colour Shoots, Children, Family

Booking a family photo session should feel exciting — a chance to capture the love, laughter, and quirks that make your family yours. But if we’re honest, many parents also feel a little nervous. Will the children behave? What if someone has a meltdown? How do I make sure we all look nice without stressing everyone out?

Here’s the good news: a family photo session doesn’t need to feel like a test. With the right approach (and a bit of gentle preparation), it can be a relaxed, joyful experience that leaves you with memories you’ll treasure for years.

Shift the focus from “perfect” to “playful” 🌿

The best family photo sessions aren’t about stiff smiles or perfectly matching outfits. They’re about connection. When children feel like they’re free to play, explore, and be themselves, their true personalities shine through.

In the days before your session, talk to your children about it as something fun rather than something formal. You might say, “We’re going to meet Mel at the park, and she’ll take pictures while we play together.” That simple reframing helps children relax before we even meet.

Keep outfits simple and comfortable 👕👗

While it’s tempting to plan coordinated outfits, comfort always wins. Scratchy fabrics, tight collars, or clothes children don’t usually wear can make them restless. Choose outfits that:

  • Feel good to wear

  • Allow freedom to run and climb

  • Reflect your family’s natural style

Neutrals and soft colours photograph beautifully outdoors, but don’t be afraid to let personalities shine through. A favourite cardigan or beloved wellies can add charm and authenticity to your family photo session.

Manage expectations (for children and parents alike!) ✨

Children aren’t robots — they’ll have moods, big feelings, and moments of distraction. And that’s okay. Some of the most beautiful photographs happen when things don’t go “to plan”: a burst of giggles, a cuddle after tears, or a mischievous glance between siblings.

Parents often put the most pressure on themselves. Remember: your role isn’t to control every detail, but to simply show up, be present, and enjoy the experience. The love you share will come through no matter what.

Plan around your child’s rhythm 🕊️

Every family has its natural flow. If your little ones are happiest in the morning, that’s the perfect time for your session. If they’re calmer after lunch, we’ll work with that. Choosing a time when children are most relaxed means fewer battles and more smiles.

It’s also a good idea to bring along small comforts — a snack, a drink, or even a favourite toy. Sometimes those little things are what keep children settled and happy during a family photo session.

Embrace the outdoors 🌳

One of the reasons I love photographing families outdoors is that it instantly creates a sense of freedom. Children can run, climb, or simply sit in the grass — and that energy makes photos come alive. Parents, too, often find they relax more easily outdoors, with fresh air and space to breathe.  Have a wee nosey at my Outdoor Gallery and you can see what im talking about.

Trust the process 📸

The magic of a family photo session isn’t in getting everyone to smile at the same time. It’s in capturing the bonds, the laughter, and even the quiet moments in between. Trust me to guide things gently, step back when needed, and step in when the moment is right.

Final Thoughts

Preparing for a family photo session doesn’t have to be complicated. With a little thought, a comfortable outfit, and an open mind, you can step into the experience ready to enjoy it.

At the end of the day, what matters most isn’t “perfect” pictures — it’s memories of love, togetherness, and joy that you’ll treasure for a lifetime.  If you would like more information Click Here or you can WhatsApp me on 07703389313
